Good European Fishing Vacations

So you're thinking about taking a fishing holiday somewhere where you can take in the beautiful scenery and also catch something a little different to what you're used to? What are the best European fishing holiday destinations that you could take? In this article, I'll give you a few choice selections to consider which I think you will enjoy.

Spain

There are many opportunities to go fishing in Spain. Despite having a reputation as a dry and hot country, you can fish in many of the natural parks and most of the rivers too. The rivers are rich with salmon but also large carp and catfish. For these latter two fish, the River Ebro is a great location for fishing. You can also go off-shore and hire a boat in order to catch swordfish in late summer to early August.

Scotland

Scotland is a great place to go fishing. Despite a handful of large cities, most of the country is countryside and is largely untouched and preserved. Salmon and trout can be found in rivers and lochs. You can also go Fishing off the west coast and get all sorts of fish such as mackerels, bass, dogfish, pollock and more.

If you prefer, you can combine fishing with hiking as the Highlands offer great vistas and walking them is an experience you will never forget. Otherwise, you are best off with a hire car to get you from one place to another.

Slovenia

Central and East European fishing destinations are becoming more and more popular these days. Many of these countries are beautiful in their own right and offer great and previously unknown opportunities for fishing. Much of Slovenia is mountainous which means that there are numerous rivers and opportunities to go fly fishing. The waters here are very clear indeed. Marble trout are the main target here.

Nearby Croatia also offers similarly good fly fishing opportunities. The river Gacka has an excellent worldwide reputation for the quality of its brown trout.

Poland

Most people do not think of Poland when considering fishing holidays, probably because they have images of the cold winters there. The summers, however, are much nicer and temperatures often exceed those in northerly parts of Western Europe.

The best action can be found in the west of the country, in the Lubuskie region that lies on the Polish/German border. This region features many lakes where huge carp and catfish can be caught. You can also do a number of water sports and other activities. The accommodation here is well established and plentiful.

These are just a few of the great fishing holiday destinations to be found in Europe.

Effective Carp Fishing Tips For Beginners

Carp Fishing Tips

Carp fishing is extremely popular, specially in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe but additionally the United States and in other places. A lot of people that graduate to carp fishing however are somewhat unsure at times about just what it involves and the simplest way to begin with. In this post, I will reveal to you some practical carp fishing strategies for the beginner.

Rods

Carp are big fish and thus require more bait than many other species. Therefore, you want a stronger rod than you may be previously accustomed to.

Carp fishing rods tend to be sturdy and more rigid. They will typically flex all the way through to the handle. They'll also feature larger rings but fewer of them compared to other kinds of Fishing rod.

Lure

First you need a good line. A 15lb or 20lb line is what I commonly use. Sufix Tritanium is a good brand which I would suggest for you. Then you need a heavy leader (about 50lb) so the line can get through weeds. Boilie bait is great for reeling in carp.

Deciding upon Your Spot

Carp are especially prized because, they're not only so big, however they are also hard to catch. It is possible to watch for some considerable period sometimes prior to a bite. Examine any charts made available for the lake that you will be fishing at. Apply it like a general guide but don't confine yourself to only the preferred patches.

Carp like to spend time beneath the overgrown branches of trees and shrubs in depths which can be between 5 and 8 feet. Many of these sites are going to be not even considered of many fishermen (or so they believe). You need to practise your long casting technique and, as appropriate, work with a long rod to succeed in these. It'll most definitely be worthwhile though because you will get a lot more bites than some other anglers who're less ambitious as yourself.

Multiple Rods

It can be a good plan to take several rods with you and cast them in a few positions but all from your same position. See how many bites you receive and then cast more often in those locations you will get a lot more bites.

This sounds like such a simple tactic and it is. But it always amazes me how few people actually stick to it.

Making Fishing a family activity

Many people love to go fishing, instead of playing tennis or golf. Others make it their primary sport activity together with their families and friends to relieve boredom and stress. Surveys say that more than 50 million Americans love to go fishing and make it their lifestyle option instead of other sports. In Alabama, Fishing represents a substantial impact on the state economy. Hundreds of millions of dollars are represented and about 20,000 people list fishing as their source of livelihood. However, most people consider it as a form of relaxation and a family activity. In general, it is a lifestyle option.

In the book titled ?The Incomplete Psychology of Everyday Fishing;? psychologist Paul G. Quinnett dedicated an entire chapter about fishing as a source to relieve stress. In the chapter, ?Ethics of Fishing? he points out that a person must appreciate and enjoy the benefits of nature. He also highlighted that fishing correct is a way for an individual to become more disciplined in his lifestyle. ?Family Life First,? an organization dedicated to introducing how to spend useful family time to parents for their children, have factual data that in the past 20 years, 25 percent of a child?s playing time has decreased. Outdoor activities, where most children spend their playing time, have also declined by 50 percent. Since 1969 to 1996, 22 percent of family time activities have lessened proven by the study of the White House Council of Economic Advisers.

Any fruitful time to interact with your children is time worth investing. Fishing is a way to connect. The quality time you get is really worth the effort. The experience you get by catching fish is what makes it wonderful to enjoy and that is the important part of fishing. There are 23 public fishing lakes having plenty of fish waiting to be caught. All children can experience the excitement and adventure of fishing. You will always remember the very first time you caught a fish, and the parent who showed you how to catch it. You gain enjoyable and learning experiences from fishing that makes it a great family activity. Alabama, for example, promotes its lakes and open banks as places best for fishing. You do not even need a boat to catch fish. There are also stores where you can find what you need for fishing. You may bring your family with you and the time of being together and enjoying the fun of fishing is the best family activity you could have.

Fly Fishing Terms

Like in any other sports, fly fishing has its own set of terms and jargon to talk about everything related to this activity.

While it makes communicating with other fly Fishing enthusiasts easier, it can be confusing to the average person, much less to those who are just starting out with fly fishing.

To help out beginners, below are some fly fishing terms which will let newbies get the hang of them and let them understand what other more-experienced fly fishers are talking about.

Back-cast - is the act of casting the line by first throwing it backwards, letting it unfurl, then casting it forward.

Buzzer - a term that refers to flies or any other insect that flies over the water.

Cover - the act of casting a fly to an area with a good number of fish.

Fly - an artificial lure which attracts fish by imitating a natural lure or by getting its attention with the lure's bright colors.

Fly Line - the line usually made of synthetic material to which the hook is attached.

Fly Reel - the object which holds the line. It comes in several types depending on several factors which include the materials used and function.

Fly Rod - the rod used specifically for fly fishing. It is usually made of bamboo, fiberglass and graphite.

Jig - a small and metal-headed artificial lure which usually has feathers on it.

What is listed above is only the most common terms used in fly fishing. However, they are enough to let beginners get by in conversations about the activity.

There are others more out there that beginners can pick up as one gains experience in this angling method.

Fly Fishing Safety

Fly fishing is a fun and exciting thing to do. However, it can be dangerous if done without the proper safeguards.

Thus, this article discusses the safety practices that should be observed when going fly fishing.

The first thing one should remember is to familiarize oneself with the waters that he/she intends to go fishing.

However, if it is the person's first time to go Fishing in a particular area, it would be a wise move to bring a wading staff and wear a pair of boots. It helps the person have a sure footing in unfamiliar waters.

Also, before setting out on a fishing trip, the person should check the local weather forecast. That way, he/she does not endanger himself/herself by setting out during a particularly bad weather.

But if the weather is good, he/she should still bring enough provisions and protective gear just in case the person finds himself/herself in a nasty weather condition.

Since help would probably be hard to come by in fishing areas, having enough supplies and protection will help the person prepare for the worst.

It would also be good to remove the barb in the hook. Without a barb, it would be easier to remove the hook just in case somebody gets caught with it.

There are several ways to remove the barb without destroying the hook like hitting it with a piece of rock until the barb gets flattened out.

In sum, safety in fly fishing should be of a paramount concern when doing this outdoor activity. It ensures a worry and injury-free fly fishing trip.

Fly Fishing Knots

Learning how to do fly fishing knots, or any fishing knots for that matter, is an essential skill that any fishing enthusiast should have.

Different knots serve different purposes like tying two lines together, shortening a particularly long line, to name two.

Below is a list of some of the most popular knots used in fly fishing. A description accompanies each of them to show how they are used in real-world fishing situations.

Slip Knot - this is probably one of the most basic and most important knots in fishing. This knot is used to fasten the line to the spool.

Constriction Knot - this is the type of knot which is used to tie two lines together, especially those made with different materials. However, its use isn't advised on modern lines made of different materials.

Albright Knot - not to be associated with the former British Prime Minister, this knot is primarily used to tie the backing to the fly line. It can also be used to join lines of different diameters.

Surgeon's Knot - a simple and neat way of tying to lines together. It can be best described as a double overhead knot.

Barrel Knot - also known as the Blood Knot, this is another way of tying two lines together. Although weaker and more complicated than the Surgeon's Knot, it is a neater way of tying a knot.

There are several more knots that Fishing enthusiasts do, but those listed above are by far the most popular and effective.

Fly Fishing Equipment – Fly Rod

There are several pieces of equipment used in fly Fishing. This article will discuss one of its most fundamental equipments which is the fly rod. This is where the fly line is attached.

The fly rod comes in several sizes. Its length typically ranges from as short as 6 ft to as long as 13 ft.
Aside from the length, fly fishing rods are measured by their weight. As a rule of thumb, the smaller the value of the weight, the smaller the fish it can catch.

For example, a fly rod of 0wt (zero weight) is enough to catch a small trout. For bigger types of fish such as a salmon, a fly rod of a heavier weight is used.

A fly rod's weight is also important in determining the weight of the fly line that can be used with it. So a rod of 10wt requires a #10 line and could not use a line of a different size.
There are rods which can accommodate a variety of weights but they tend to compromise performance for flexibility.

Bamboo is the traditional material used as a Fly Rod. It is prized by fly fishing enthusiasts for its surprising strength in typical conditions.

It can be pricey though, which is why others choose rods made of alternative materials such as fiberglass and graphite. The two are chosen for their durability (they are not prone to rusting) and performance (they are lighter compared to other materials).

Fly Fishing Equipment – Fly Reels

Fly fishing is a sport which requires special pieces of equipment in order to be done. The fly reel is one of these equipments and plays an important role in fly Fishing.

The fly reel is the one which holds the spool of line used in catching a fish. Also, it functions as the piece which controls the line.

If more line needs to be released or if the line slackens, it is the fly reel which adjusts the line to the desired length.

This piece of equipment can be made out of different materials. However, in saltwater fly fishing, aluminum is the material of choice because it is rust-proof. Saltwater is a highly-corrosive element, thus the need for a component made of aluminum.

Usually, fly reels are manually-operated. However, mechanical ones are favored by those who intend to go fly fishing in more demanding situations like those which involve long and arduous runs.

A typical fly reel has the retrieve on only one side. However, modern-day reels have interchangeable retrieves, meaning that the user can choose where to place a retrieve depending on which hand is stronger or on the type of fishing that he/she intends to do.

For example, right handed big game fishers prefer to have the retrieve to their right. Interchangeable retrieves are good for those who want to have a versatile reel. Also, it can save money compared to buying a specific retrieve for a specific need.

Fly Fishing Equipment – Fly Line

Several pieces of equipment are used in the sport of fly Fishing. One of these is the fly line. It is the piece which is cast in fly fishing since the flies used in this method of angling are virtually weightless.

Modern-day fly lines are made of a tough braided or a monofilament core which is wrapped in a thick layer of plastic. They also come in a variety of models which are used in different kinds of environments.

There are lines that can be used in seawater then there are those that can be used in cold temperatures. Each specific model ensures maximum effectiveness when used in the environment it was designed for.

Fly lines come in different sizes. These sizes are not only important in buying lines but also in determining the rods they can be used with. It is because a line's size is always matched with the weight of the rod. So for example, a #7 line is to be used with a rod of 7wt.

Aside from the line, another consideration when buying a line is the taper. Some lines have a taper at one end while others are tapered on both ends.

The advantage of the latter over single-tapered lines is that the other side can still be used when the other one is worn out.

Also, the taper has an influence on how well it can be cast. A heavier taper can be cast easier which is why it is recommended for beginners.

Fly Fishing Equipment – Artificial Flies

There is probably nothing more complicated in fly Fishing equipment than the artificial flies. Flies are the ones used to attract the fish's attention and play a major role in catching a fish.

Although its purpose may be straightforward, there is nothing straightforward in choosing the right fly for the right fish.

In the past, choosing a fly is easy enough because there are specific flies for a specific fish.

For example, a trout fly is to be used exclusively on trout and a salmon fly on salmon. But in the present, there are more specific flies that cater to the varying diets of a particular fish.

So for example, a trout does not only have a singular trout fly, but also has flies that imitate frogs, worms, etc.

Another source of confusion, at least for beginners, is that categories of US fly types are named differently than their British counterparts.

For example, what are called dry flies in the United States are simply called dries in the UK.

But despite the difference in taxonomy, they usually have the same set of sub-categories. Again using the dry flies as an example, the sub-category of mayflies can be found in both categories.

Aside from its different types, flies also differ in sizes. Usually, a fly's size ranges from #2 to #22 with the former being the largest.

Not to worry though as the confusion can be resolved by a good advice from reputable and experienced fly fishing equipment vendors. It is always a good idea to ask them when in doubt of which type of fly to buy when one goes fly fishing.
