Basics of Fly Fishing

Are you ready to try fly fishing? Well fly fishing is a lot different to bait fishing but these differences are what make it such a beloved sport of many anglers. In this article, I'll give you a few fly fishing basics to save you the headache of assimilating new knowledge and help you more easily make a start for yourself in this fascinating type of fishing.

The Rod

The rod is very simple and quite different to a spinning rod. First, the rod often comes in several pieces which make it much easier to carry as a set. They connect together easily in a similar way to tent rods. The reel is incredibly simple. It features a single small handle and a knob to increase or decrease the tension.

In general, the larger the flies that you use then the larger the rod you need. If you are fishing mainly trout then you can get away with a smaller rod but if you want to also fish for larger, more exotic fish then you really need to use a separate rod.

Flies

Fly Fishing does not use any live bait or even prepared bait. Instead, "flies" are created from natural or synthetic materials such as threads, furs or feathers. While you can make your own, they are also easily found in your local fishing store.

Artificial flies work because they resemble real prey. Fish are attracted to them either because they move like prey or because some other feature of them draws the fish into an instinctive response. There are many different flies available depending on the job you want them to fulfil. Some, such as nymphs, resemble immature flies and sit under the water. Others, such as dry flies, are buoyant and float on the surface of the water.

Do your research before you head out and determine which types of flies you need. Unlike live and prepared bait, flies are tiny and it is not too expensive to carry a large set of them around with you that will be fit for most scenarios.

Casting

With bait fishing, the line is light and it is the bait that is flung out forward, carrying the line with it. With fly fishing, the opposite is the case. The flies weigh practically nothing but the line is much thicker than that used for bait fishing because it is coated in plastic.

The casting action is also different. Think of a metronome that makes only small angles to and from the vertical. This is similar to how a fly fisher casts his line. The casting action is done with the forearm. Some anglers use their wrist but this is generally considered incorrect form. To get close to your fish, you may need to walk into the water. You may have seen waders being used for this purpose. They are like a pair of boots with watertight, chest high trousers attached.

Fly fishing is great fun. You will need to practise however. Once you start off you'll find you'll want to learn more and more until you become a true fly fishing expert.

Best Fishing Vacations

It's a great idea to go fishing somewhere else in the world the question is where? Where are the best fishing vacations in the world? This subject is the point of much contention and argument and it is rare for two people to agree. Nevertheless, I have selected a few possible locations for you to consider and all of them give great fishing experiences.

Lake Baikal

I first heard of this fishing spot when I was watching one of the numerous cable Fishing channels. If you didn't already know, this Siberian lake contains the largest amount of fresh water of any lake in the world and contains 20% of the world's entire supply of it!

There is a huge amount of wildlife diversity here and at least fifty different species of fish. Here, you can fish in the lake itself or in the surrounding streams. Most people take a vacation of around a week to a week and a half. This will allow you to fish from several different spots and you might want to consider a pre-arranged itinerary. Equipment rental is easily arranged.

Thailand

Thailand is well known for its beautiful beaches and clear water. Despite being a popular non-fishing tourist destination, it is still possible to have a great fishing holiday there away from the crowds. You can fish many different species there from catfish to stingray. In particular, the famous Mekong River has incredible biodiversity that is only bettered by the Amazon. Many angling tourists come here to fish for carp and catfish.

Thailand is still a relatively cheap tourist destination. Aside from getting there, accommodation, food and equipment rental is much cheaper than in Western Europe and the United States.

Caribbean

The Caribbean as a whole offers countless opportunities for all types of fishing. Whether you want to go fly fishing or deep sea fishing, the Caribbean has it all plus the other obvious attractions of great weather and great beaches. Your best bet is to join a charter and let the skipper take you to the best spots. Alternatively, you can save money and stick to the shore or use your own small sailboat.

Each country offers different types of fishing. Bonefishing can be done on nearly all of the islands. Some offer year round fishing and in others it is better to come only during the first half of the year. Puerto Rico is still considered the number one fishing island in the Caribbean but the others still have plenty to offer.

I hope the above has inspired you to think about a few places where yo ucan enjoy fishing some where different in the world. Of course there are other great destinations too which we will be covering in due course.

Tips for catfishing

There are a few basic methods that are effective in catching catfish. Bear in mind that specific methods are applicable to specific kinds of waters. That is because techniques and baiting mixtures are formulated for specific targets.

The following methods are simple, yet proven successful when used:

1) Rigging method - Depending on the bait used, loop the bait holder or the treble hook from a line to a preferred distance to the end. Bait movement is not suggested; therefore, a weight must be used to allow the rig to be still. A good distance shall be about 18" to 24." Same as the first method, using the Slipweight to make the bait stable is also effective. The weight does not matter as long as it can slide in the line. The fish will not feel any weight and it will be late until they realize that the bait is fake. Multibait technique allows multiple catches at once. Simply place three-way swivel along the line. As it draws more strikes it makes a great choice for catching more catfish at the same time.

2) Bait - Experts opt for chicken livers or medium sized shrimp from groceries. The shrimp's tail and skin must be removed and body should be big enough to slide up in a number 6 hook. This is simpler than the chicken which necessitates the use of pantyhose. A diameter of a quarter is wrapped in a piece of pantyhose leaving a tag end then attach it through the treble hook. Blood worms, minnows, catfish paste, night crawlers, snails, living or dead small fish, and dough baits are also good choices of baits. Remember that the best baits are always those that nature produced.

3) Chumming - Fishermen catch more catfish with this method. This is simply throwing balls of mixtures of natural recipes in the fishing area. This attracts more catfish; the trick is that the mixture should be right enough for the catfish to feed heavily. The hook that will be used to fish normally must have the same recipe for the bait. Adding a good smelling flavor into the pasty mixture attracts catfish more.

4) Tackling - Although the technique involved in this method is by far effective, it's still the bait that attracts and brings the catfish in. As simple as it is, the tackle should be about 6 feet long with a spinning real. Choose heavier lines to allow more battle between the fisherman and the catfish. It doesn't necessarily have to be expensive. The experience you get from a cheaper tackle is no different from an expensive one.

Make sure the grip is secure hooks are removed by pliers after catching the fish. Avoid being stuck with the fins as some are poisonous. Just simply sliding the hand up to its belly from tail, placing the fingers behind one side and thumb behind the other can remove the catfish from the hook without any harm. Happy catFishing and good luck!

Great Fishing Tips For Beginners

Are you just starting out with your fishing hobby? Are you looking for a few pointers to help you catch more fish?

Here are a few great fishing tips for beginners that will really help you on your way to become a more successful angler.

Be Patient

Many new anglers are not used to being so patient. We live in a world full of 24/7 communication and we rarely have to wait for anything. In nature, this is definitely not the case. Much of the enjoyment of fishing comes from sitting in nature and having good company when your friends are able to pop along too. If you want to be catching fish every five minutes then most types of fishing are not suitable. You could try offshore fishing from a boat though as the right spots will be full of hungry fish.

Get The Local Knowledge

When you are new to a place then it can be difficult to figure out where the best spots to fish from are. Sometimes, you can study an area but your lack of knowledge of what is going on under the waterline means that you don't have the full picture. I strongly advise you to get local knowledge. Ask at your local fishing store and also ask other anglers. Don't expect them to give away their best secrets because many of them will not. However, most will be willing to help out a newbie.

Be Prepared To Move

While it is nice to get everything set up and then settle down for a few hours, with angling you must be prepared to move. This comes down to accepting that your original spot might not be so good and you could do better elsewhere.

Use The Right Tools For The Job

This is where fishing can get incredibly complex. Although you can use one set of equipment to catch many different types of fish, you will enjoy much more success if you use the right rod, the right line and the right bait.

Learn To Relax

You usually need to be fairly quiet and still when you fish. If you are casting quite far then, as long as the rod remains still, you can talk to your heart's content with your buddy. However, if you are fly fishing in waders in a river then you must keep still. Just learn how to relax and enjoy Fishing for what it is. There is no rush involved (unless you enter a competition).

You will really enjoy fishing and the tips above will help you get the most out of it when yo uare starting off.

Different Fishing Techniques

If you are looking for some fishing techniques you'll find some good ones in the post below. Not all fishing techniques are suitable for all circumstances. You need to pick and choose. Different types of fishing demand different techniques depending on where you are fishing and also what fish you are looking to catch. Here are a few pointers to help you better your own personal Fishing techniques.

Fishing Techniques For Bass

The best way to catch bass is to use lures. There are quite a few different ones that you can use with great success and each one demands its own unique way of using it. Plug lures such as crankbait work really well. In murky water, use bright lures or else the fish won't see your lure. On the other hand, if the water is clear then this can be the wrong strategy because the fish can more easily figure out that your bait is fake!

Fishing Techniques For Catfish

You need to be adequately prepared before tackling these large fish so make sure your equipment is up to the job. Drift fishing is a great way to catch catfish. This means you sit in your boat and slowly drift. Some anglers use a drift sock which helps to keep your drift slow, especially on a windy day although it is by no means essential. The colder the water, the slower your drift should be.

Fishing Techniques For Trout

Trout feed mainly on insects so are especially suited to fly fishing. Spinners make for great lures, as do some types of plastic worm. Early mornings and late evenings are good times to get lots of bites.

Fishing Techniques For Crappie

Live minnows are expensive but are among the best type of bait for this type of fish. They stay near the shore in the spring but as the water gets warmer then you will run out of luck. That is, unless you have access to a boat because the fish will head for deeper water, further away from the shore.

Fishing Techniques For Walleye

With this species of fish you need to understand their behaviour well because it will demand a different technique depending on what season and time of day it is. If you want to go for the huge females then aim for the night time in the summer as this is when the big fish come to shore to feed.

As you can see from the above different fish require their own fishing techniques to get the best out of your hobby.

Fishing For Beginners

So you want to start a fishing hobby? If you're new to fishing or have never tried it before then you're in for one heck of a treat. Fishing is one of the most popular pastimes in the world. It requires skill and patience but is also incredibly satisfying - whether or not you even catch anything! Here are a few tips on fishing for beginners.

Start Local

Don't set your sights too high. You're not going to catch Jaws anytime soon. Start locally. Most municipalities have areas where you can go fishing. You may need a license in some areas but this usually costs next to nothing. It may not look glamorous but your local pond, lake or river is just what you need to get comfortable with the basics before seeking new spots to fish from.

Start Cheap

At this stage of your fishing career, there is no need to splash out huge wads of money to get started. Drop by your local fishing store and tell them that you are interested in fishing but may not stick with it if you don't like it. Tell them you want something cheap but reliable.

Another way to keep costs down is to buy second hand equipment. There is a huge market in used fishing supplies. Make sure you get the opinion of an angling friend of yours before buying. He or she can also inspect any equipment in case the seller is trying to pull a fast one on you.

Be Patient

It is not uncommon to wait hours for a bite. Depending on the species, you can normally get a bite with several tens of minutes.

Fishing is a game of great patience. You must keep the rod still or else the fish will figure you out and stay away from your bait. This is easier if you use a Fishing rod holder. After casting, simply attach your rod to the holder and then sit back and wait. You can buy one with an alarm that will give you an audible signal when you get a bite!

Treat The Fish With Respect

Most anglers use a landing net. Basically, when you reel the fish in and it is close to shore you can scoop it up with the landing net. This makes both your life and the fish's life easier. Take the hook out of the fish's mouth carefully and don't just throw the fish back into the water. Hold it carefully in your hands and submerge it slowly into the water. Release your grip and the fish should swim away within a couple of seconds.

Enjoy The Experience

If you are very impatient or impulsive then fishing may not be for you. Having said that, many of these types of people find great relief from fishing and it may be one of the few ways that they discover that lets them finally relax.

Most of the time, you will not be battling with a fish but instead be waiting for a bite. This is a great time to just sit back and relax with a few beers. For many men, going fishing is a way of combining a sport with hanging out with your buddies at the same time.

Fishing is a wonderful hobby and there's no better time to start than right now!

Which is the Best Fishing Bait to Choose?

Which type of fishing bait should you use? There are three main types of fishing bait and which one you use depends on the type of fish you want to snare and also your own personal preference. If you want to catch fish then you need to give them an incentive to grab hold of your hook. This is what fishing bait is used for so it mmakes sense to try and choose the best one for this purpose under the circumstances you are fishing.

Live Bait

This includes worms, maggots and even other types of insect such as grasshoppers and flies. Live bait is good for several types of fish including catfish, pike and sea bass. Ask your local Fishing supplies store and other anglers which is the best live bait for the fish you are trying to catch. It can even depend on the time of year. For example, grasshoppers are great for catching catfish

Prepared Bait

Prepared bait is bait that has been processed or prepared and is no longer alive but is still highly edible. There are many different types of prepared bait and some types cannot be found everywhere but only in a few unique places. The advantage of prepared bait is that you can keep it for when you need it and need not keep it alive like you would need to for live bait.

Some of the popular ones include kernels of corn, cubes of cheese or even ham, bread balls, nuts and other preparations. Many anglers like to experiment with food scraps and make unique varieties of bait that they think the fish will enjoy. It can take several attempts but a great deal of satisfaction can be had from discovering a great combination that fish love.

Boilies are a unique type of prepared bait. A mixture of foods such as fishmeal, flour and milk proteins are mixed together and then boiled (hence the name). They retain their shape and do not break up when submerged in water and some varieties will even float in the water. They are hard on the outside and therefore not desirable to smaller fish (boilies are intended for larger fish such as carp).

Artificial Bait

Artificial bait is a type of bait that is completely man-made and not constructed from food or living organisms. These come in many different forms such as plastic worms, spinners and artificial flies. The intention with artificial bait is to mimic the prey that the fish you are trying to catch will normally live on. For example, a spinner will spin around in the water and reflect light back off its metal surfaces. This mimics the action of small fish with their own reflective scales.

I hope this article will have given you some pointers to choosing the best bait for your fishing endeavours.

Which Fishing Accessories Do You Need?

Which Fishing accessories do you need? In his article we look at a few of the basic fishing acccesories, some of which you need and some you may not. At the very least, you need a rod, a reel, a line, a hook and some bait. But what are the additional fishing accessories that can make your life much easier? Let's take a closer look.

Tackle Box

If you didn't already buy one of these when you started out then you will soon want one very quickly! The bits and pieces you need for fishing such as hooks, floats and bombs are all quite small and the last thing you want to do is to carry them around loose in a bag or sack. You need to be organised and this will make for much less hassle. A good tackle box will have several compartments. I personally prefer the ones that look like a small toolbox and have several levels/trays.

Bite Alarm

Before these were invented, anglers would have to keep their eyes and ears peeled for a bite. You could easily miss an opportunity, especially if you were using a rod holder. Thanks to bite alarms, this need not be the case anymore. Usually a bite alarm will have an LED that will light up when a bite is detected. More useful is the audible alarm that is also emitted.

Scales

Scales are not at all necessary to go fishing. You only really need a set of scales if you are going out to break some records or catch a particularly big fish.

Fishing Chair

Although you can take a regular deck chair or even a crate with you to go fishing, you may want to invest in a nice fishing chair. This makes a lot of sense because most of your time will be spent waiting or otherwise passing the time until you get a bite. Decide for yourself whether or not you need armrests. Also, consider the weight of the chair if you need to transport it over long distances (e.g. by foot or by bike).

Nets

Although you don't need a net to catch fish, most anglers consider a landing net to be essential. It makes it easier for both you and the fish when it comes to transporting the fish those last couple of feet from the water to the shore. If you are into match fishing or want to keep all your catches together before later releasing them (e.g. to take a picture) then you might want to buy a keep net. This is an extending net that is kept submerged in the water. The fish cannot escape but they can happily survive until you later release them.

As you progress your fishing hobby you may wish to get additional fishing accessories such as bait storage, fishfinders, rod racks, fishing gloves, bait traps, and other useful fishing accessories.

Good European Fishing Vacations

So you're thinking about taking a fishing holiday somewhere where you can take in the beautiful scenery and also catch something a little different to what you're used to? What are the best European fishing holiday destinations that you could take? In this article, I'll give you a few choice selections to consider which I think you will enjoy.

Spain

There are many opportunities to go fishing in Spain. Despite having a reputation as a dry and hot country, you can fish in many of the natural parks and most of the rivers too. The rivers are rich with salmon but also large carp and catfish. For these latter two fish, the River Ebro is a great location for fishing. You can also go off-shore and hire a boat in order to catch swordfish in late summer to early August.

Scotland

Scotland is a great place to go fishing. Despite a handful of large cities, most of the country is countryside and is largely untouched and preserved. Salmon and trout can be found in rivers and lochs. You can also go Fishing off the west coast and get all sorts of fish such as mackerels, bass, dogfish, pollock and more.

If you prefer, you can combine fishing with hiking as the Highlands offer great vistas and walking them is an experience you will never forget. Otherwise, you are best off with a hire car to get you from one place to another.

Slovenia

Central and East European fishing destinations are becoming more and more popular these days. Many of these countries are beautiful in their own right and offer great and previously unknown opportunities for fishing. Much of Slovenia is mountainous which means that there are numerous rivers and opportunities to go fly fishing. The waters here are very clear indeed. Marble trout are the main target here.

Nearby Croatia also offers similarly good fly fishing opportunities. The river Gacka has an excellent worldwide reputation for the quality of its brown trout.

Poland

Most people do not think of Poland when considering fishing holidays, probably because they have images of the cold winters there. The summers, however, are much nicer and temperatures often exceed those in northerly parts of Western Europe.

The best action can be found in the west of the country, in the Lubuskie region that lies on the Polish/German border. This region features many lakes where huge carp and catfish can be caught. You can also do a number of water sports and other activities. The accommodation here is well established and plentiful.

These are just a few of the great fishing holiday destinations to be found in Europe.
